Satin Doll is a newly renovated four-bedroom pool villa on Galle’s prime oceanfront at Mihiripenna, near Talpe. Formerly known as the Doctor’s House, when it was used as a place of Ayurvedic healing, the villa dates back to 2002 and was one of the first to be built along this picturesque stretch of coastline.
After the villa’s refurbishment in 2013, the new owners, influenced by their love of jazz, gifted it a new name – Satin Doll is a jazz standard written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn – and a new lease of life. The walls, formerly black, were painted a fresh white and the overgrown garden was cut back and softly carpeted with grass to open up the panoramic Indian Ocean vistas beyond. Indoors, the furniture, lamps and soft furnishings sourced from Sri Lanka, China and India infuse the villa with style and homeliness, whilst the owners’ eye-catching collection of artwork – largely by Indian and Sri Lankan contemporary artists, including a few by the talented young local artist Vimukti Sahan – adorn the walls.
Satin Doll is a great villa for friends and families, and with a pair of bedrooms located at either end of the building, it works particularly well for two families holidaying together. There’s a petit swimming pool, footsteps from the sitting room, and a mezzanine TV snug above the open-plan living area, plus plenty of well-furnished nooks to allow everyone to spread out; each bedroom has its own terrace at the front, with swivel screens to open up, or close off, views of the sea. The front lawn, dotted with palms, has a breezy pavilion for daytime dining and a built-in corner lounge for watching Sri Lanka’s legendary sunsets.
