Mandalay is one of Sri Lanka’s most cherished hideaways. Picturesquely situated on the serene shores of Koggala Lake, Mandalay is an enchanting private sanctuary ’and the perfect antidote to work. Enhanced by a glorious tropical garden, the villa’s gorgeous lakeside views can be enjoyed, collectively or solitarily, from many places throughout the grounds.
Achieve instant relaxation as you curl up on cushion-clad sofas and immerse yourself in a book; indeed you may even feel suitably inspired to write your own. Martin Wickramasinghe, one of the island’s most celebrated authors who hails from Koggala, set many of his books in Mandalay’s neighbourhood; Madul Doova, the mystical uninhabited island that Mandalay so picturesquely overlooks, inspired the title of a book he penned in 1947.
Evocatively named after Rudyard Kipling’s iconic ballad, Mandalay, the villa is certainly full of Eastern Promise; a delightfully large swimming pool basks exotically in the garden beside an expansive living and dining pavilion whilst right beside the lake is a small ambalama (gazebo) lavishly accessorised with cushions for quietly observing lakeside life. Perhaps the villa’s most gorgeous feature however is the ginormous master bedroom that takes up the entire first floor; it is definitely one of the most romantic on the island.
The design of the house was influenced by Sri Lanka’s architectural maestro, the late Geoffrey Bawa, a friend of the original owners, who sketched his vision for the land onto the back of an envelope. A quick glance is certainly all that’s required to see that Bawa’s architectural hallmarks are definitely in evidence here. The villa also has its own pontoon reaching out over the still water of the lake – a gorgeous spot for sunset drinks and candlelit dining.
Families will love Mandalay, but its intimate size also makes it work for decadent couples. The small staff teamare discreet but pamper to all of your needs, including provisioning for your meals (groceries on guest account). Fishermen often pass by the villa to proffer their fresh catch or to offer lake tours. Although Mandalay feels a million miles from anywhere, the beach is only a kilometre away, whilst restaurants, shops and amenities are a fifteen minute drive.

“A charming, quiet villa on a beautiful lake only 750m from the main road and ideally located for exploring Mirissa, Galle and much of the south coast. Its rustic charm is complimented by the lovely staff. Dalsi has a smile to greet you each morning, Chinthaka's knowledge of the area and superb food are second to none! Be sure to try his chicken curry, beans and daal! I hope to visit Mandalay again, it is a little slice of heaven amidst the hustle and bustle of Sri Lanka's south coast.”
