Sri Lanka » South Coast » Tangalle » Ocean's Edge - an elite haven

With spectacular views of Sri Lanka’s south coast, the colonial-inspired, two-storey, four-bedroom villa, Ocean’s Edge, offers a true taste of exotic seclusion. Comfortably furnished wraparound verandas overlook the huge, tropical, bird-filled garden, beyond which sits a gorgeous swimming pool – the perfect place to cool off in the heat of the day. A fully-equipped kitchen, air conditioned TV Room and open living and dining areas complete the picture.   Fully-staffed, Ocean’s Edge is a beautifully private villa, perfectly suited for families, groups and nature lovers looking to completely relax and unwind. Opportunities for exploratory walks along the near-deserted beach are endless.

Location

Ocean’s Edge sits in serene seclusion on the fringe of Kahandamodera village, near Rekawa, 16km east of Tangalle.  The access road to the villa winds past paddy fields and small lotus-strewn lakes home to numerous shore birds.  The beach to the front of Ocean’s Edge is often visited by marine turtles and extends to the east across a rocky outcrop towards Kalametiya wetlands and the barren red earth of Ussangoda.  To the west it snakes back towards Tangalle, the closest town, where restaurants, banks, pharmacies and supermarkets can all be found.

About Tangalle

Tangalle is a sleepy fishing port in the island’s deep south where villagers go about their daily chores with an unhurried charm, stopping frequently to chat with relatives and friends. Its main attraction are the many beaches that surround the town to the east and west – some of the island’s most picturesque, tranquil and unspoilt. Reached along narrow tracks from the main road and hidden by rocky headlands which ensure that they remain undiscovered, many of these beaches, such as Seenimodera, Mawella and Nilwala, are flanked by beautiful patches of jungle and overhanging palms. Coves, rocky outcrops and bursting blowholes dramatise them whilst the rolling surf of the deep blue ocean provides an endless melody to accompany the picture-postcard scene. Inland from Tangalle, the scene is very rural; while the beaches are scattered with colourful fishing catamarans, the plains inland are carpeted with vast paddy fields where farmers are hard at work tending to their golden crops. Only lush jungle, palm tree islands, lotus-filled lakes and a few rocky outcrops vary the landscape, whilst breathtaking cave temples such as Mulkirigala are hidden within their midst. Tangalle has a supermarket, a handful of banks and a fresh produce market whilst eating out is a low-key affair; the region’s delectable ocean cuisine is typically enjoyed in a rustic restaurant overlooking the beach.

About South Coast

Stretching between Galle and Hambantota, the south coast is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka. Characterised by historically significant fortified towns, numerous picture-perfect palm-fringed beaches, a sultry turquoise sea, swathes of iridescent green paddy fields fringed by lush green jungle, ancient Buddhist temples, expansive waterways, nature-filled rainforests and tea-carpeted hills it offers enough variety to be a destination in itself; fabulous for families, groups and couples alike.

Galle is one of the region’s most significant attractions for its sixteenth century Dutch fort filled with an evocatively rich collection of buildings, boutiques, museums and luxury digs that hug a peninsular to the south of town. Galle’s popular beaches are better-facilitated, more developed and safer for swimming than those in and around Tangalle, but the further you travel east the more expansive, deserted and nature-filled they become.

Surfing, snorkelling, diving, whale watching, sailing, fishing and kayaking can all be done along this magnificent stretch of coastline as well as cycling, walking and trying your hand at Sri Lankan cookery. Inland, the scene varies as the westerly wet zone’s lush jungle interior gives way to the arid dry zone plains a little beyond Tangalle. Taking off by bicycle is often the best way to explore the hills, plains, sanctuaries and jungle whilst a boat is a must to navigate the scenic lakes and rivers that wind in between.

Some of Sri Lanka’s most popular national parks – Uda Walawe for elephants and Yala for leopards and bears – as well as a trio of its most accessible rainforests – Sinharaja, Kottawa and Kanneliya - are easily visited on a day or overnight trip from anywhere along the south coast.

Our review   Overall Rating: 7.20

Ocean’s Edge feels very remote, isolated even, but its 23 acres of grounds, not to mention a near deserted strip of tropical beach, more than compensate for any lack of nearby amenities.  Tangalle, the nearest town, is 21 kilometres away and until recently was the only option for eating out, but a slow wave of development along neighbouring Rekawa and Ranna beaches means that hotel restaurants are now opening up closer to the villa.

As if mimicking its surroundings, Ocean’s Edge is very spacious and bright, its tall arched doorways allowing plenty of light and air to infiltrate.  The bedroom configuration is particularly good for families as the master interconnects with one of the guest rooms and all of the upstairs bedrooms can easily accommodate a cot. The master’s anteroom – used as a TV or reading lounge – has its own bathroom (with tub) and could also be used to sleep a child if required.

The beach – which is ideal for walking and jogging – is around 50 metres beyond the front of the villa.  The sea here is usually too rough for swimming but the lovely pool more than makes up for this. If you do want a dip in the ocean we recommend you head towards Tangalle, whose westerly beaches are better for bathing.  The garden is perfect for fun and games (there are a few cricket bats and balls at the villa).

The staff made sure we had everything we needed.  The kitchen is well equipped so although you do have a cook at your disposal (his Sri Lankan dishes are very popular), self-catering is entirely possible and the staff will shop for anything you require on a cash and receipt basis.

From Ocean’s Edge you can easily embark on half-day trips to nearby bird or turtle sanctuaries and national parks; the staff can arrange transport.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Villa, and had 14 wonderful days there. The garden, beach and the ocean was like in a dream. We spent the days there in the sun, taking long walks on the beach and swimming (playing) in the ocean waves. The staff was really helpful and the food delicious. We can definitely recommend this place if you want a relaxing and peaceful vacation. And we will for sure return to the villa some other time.

This villa is magnificent. It is situated on a paradisiac and deserted beach). The staff is very attentive to our demands(requests), very discreet but always available. All the meals were delicious.

The villa is all that it promises. It is wonderfully built, set in an enormous garden right at the beach. The garden, full of coconut trees is a place to wander around safely. Our children,15 and 11, enjoyed the visits of the very shy monkeys and the big lizards around. We even had regular visitors from 6 little bunnies that came out of their hiding during the day. The large pool is cleaned three time s a day and allows for a relaxed afternoon with sandwiches and fresh coconut juice. To the front the gate opens to a sand beach of several kilometers. It is an empty beach, paradise.....a beach you might see on a postcard and wonder "where do those beaches actually exist?" The beaches are empty , and we mean empty. Very few fishermen and virtually not one tourist. Fantastic....if this is what you are looking for.
The service at the house requires a special mention and praise. The entire staff is friendly, certainly has received excellent training in what western visitors expect from a stay at a luxury villa and are eager to help at any time. The bed linen is changed daily, the house kept clean at all times. Snacks during the day for the kids are prepared and presented wonderfully. For dinner the cook is as versatile as a 3 star chef. Our culinary journey through Sri Lankan food was amazing. Thank you again. Having said this, the staff is also quite capable to produce excellent western food.

IN summary the place is what it promises. the drive from Dickwella airport is about 20 min. If you are looking for this romantic, secluded hideaway for you and your family or some good friends, where you can read a book, listen to the sound of the waves and enjoy long walks on beautiful long sand beaches.....look no further. If you are looking for a more social holiday with many attractions in close proximity and a beach full of tourists, music and snack bars......move on.

The ONLY downside perhaps is that the sea is a bit rough, especially if you have children that want to swim in the sea. Although we entered the water there are clear challenges for children. Having said this, many beaches in Sri Lanka have this issue and you do have a great clean pool as an alternative.

WE recommend the place fully and hopefully will be back some day.

The villa is an absolute dream, the staff treated us like royalty and we revelled in the long sandy beaches for walks with the knowledge that there would be a cold beer or a gin and tonic waiting for us to cool us down upon our return. Well worth the drive from the airport. Good location for turtle watching in Rekawa and Whale Watching in Marissa and if you need to see anymore animals then Yala national Park is a short drive away for the leopards and Elephants. Absolute bliss.

Our stay at Oceans Edge was a truly amazing experience. The villa is exquisite and the staff exceptional in attending to our needs. Whilst the location is a little remote it was great to walk along a very long stretch of beach and hardly see anyone. As we had a driver we could still visit different villages, beaches along the coast and go turtle watching. It also allowed us to truly relax after travelling around Sri Lanka for the previous 10 days.

Absolutely perfect and staff was a pure miracle. We had the best 10 days of the year. If a bad point had to be said it is the 4 to 5 hours car transfer from Colombo airport... very long. I recommend Helicopter (but they don't fly after 5PM).

Close to the beach, very private and extended with nobody.Pool sheltered from the wind. Possible to buy lobsters and fish directly to the fishers (less than 500 meters from the villa). Very attentive staff. Excellent follow up of our requests from VillaNovo.
